Knowing When to Stop: How Much Vitamin D is Too Much

Vitamin D like all other vitamins is essential to cell formation and to your overall health. However, it was reported that people, most especially those who live in the West are taking too much vitamins. In fact, the realistic figure of what they're spending on taking dietary supplements alone amounts to $23 billion annually. And health institutions think this figure is simply too much as these people are taking vitamins and other supplements they actually doesn't need everyday.

Then there are studies that even show that taking these dietary supplements everyday like Vitamin C, E, and D would have an actual benefit to people who are actually in good health already. In fact, they even warn that an overdose of these vitamins could be bad for your health. There are risks involved in taking too much dietary supplement as these may have negative consequences for you in the long run.

But before you stop taking all your dietary supplements altogether, health institutions like the National Institutes of Health, also states that there are varied evidences that show different effects of these dietary supplements on people. This is because there are too much studies regarding the effect of these supplements that there are different results from different experiments involving these dietary supplements so the result is that there are both positive and negative effects to support these studies.

Understanding the effects of different vitamins is essential if you want to remain in good health. For example, Vitamin C is a good anti-oxidant and it also helps build up a strong immune system. Vitamin E is also an anti-oxidant that should be good for health when taken in moderation. It could even avoid your having heart problems but there are also contrary findings that if could increase the risk of heart problems when you already have this disease.

However, the National Institutes of Health also recommends taking some selected supplements like Vitamin D for women after their menopausal age to aid in maintaining the sturdiness of their bones. Vitamin D is good for your physical health as one of its functions is to utilize other nutrients in the body like calcium by helping it absorb this mineral from your intestines. But this is not without risk as like all other supplements, taking Vitamin D also has its own risks.

Because of this you must first know the sources of Vitamin D, one source wherein you can acquire Vitamin D in your body is through ingestion, and this can either be taken either in the form of food or supplements. Another way to acquire Vitamin D into your body is through exposure to the sun. But you also must be careful with this as overexposure to the sun can lead to all sorts of skin problems.

Too much Vitamin D in the body will lead to too much calcium and if this condition is extended it can lead to all sorts of problems like toxicity in the blood. In fact, you know you have had too much Vitamin D when you have the symptoms associated with it and these symptoms consist of dizziness, vomiting, an incredible pain in your head, and even pain in your bones.

The solution for not taking too much Vitamin D lies in knowing when what you had ingested is enough. Health professionals are also worried that the real problem with taking dietary supplements is that there are no concrete and irrefutable evidence that the majority of those who are taking them are actually deriving an advantage from this.
